1. Fully Funded PhD Position in nanocomposites

Summary of PhD Program:

This research project will involve a comprehensive investigation of different parameters to understand the rheological properties of the mixed photocuring nanocomposite resins, the required conductivity and magnetic properties of the final material to deliver the desired results and extensive characterization of manufactured parts using the state-of-the-art characterization facilities at Department of Materials and Loughborough Materials Characterization Centre (LMCC).

2. Fully Funded Ph.D. Position in the physical safety of the female cricketer

Summary of Ph.D. Program:

As the number of females participating in cricket continues to increase and knowledge of the differences between male and female physiology, biomechanics, and other physical and psychological factors increases, there is a need to explore whether adaptations should be made to serve female participant safety best.

Previous studies looking at protection from impacts in cricket, especially in relation to the head, have directly informed international standards for cricket helmets. Ongoing studies are investigating the relationships between the nature of head collisions and reported concussion symptoms in players. Notable differences are observed here between female and male players.

3. Fully Funded Ph.D. Position in the circular economy for additive manufacturing

Summary of Ph.D. Program:

The wide-ranging advantages of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies, including flexibility to deal with complex and ever-changing product designs, lower cost of small batch production, shorter lead times due to savings in tool and fixture developments, minimization of requirements for holding stock parts as well as many other supply chain benefits, has led to significant growth in their applications across many different manufacturing sectors.

4. Fully Funded Ph.D. Position in Computational modeling of water filtration systems

Summary of Ph.D. Program:

The optimal design of membrane-based filters to remove harmful particles from water typically relies on time-consuming and expensive experimental work. In this project, you will develop mathematical and numerical methods to create digital twins of filters that allow for the rapid changing of design parameters such as membrane permeability and fluid density to optimize new designs without having to manufacture physical prototypes, thus reducing the time and cost of experimental testing. High computational efficiency and accuracy will be achieved by combining model order reduction methods (namely, proper generalized decomposition) and domain decomposition techniques.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Effective human-robot collaboration

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will explore how vision systems for people tracking can be combined with other physiological sensing methods to decode how people collaborate, and robots perform effective collaborative tasks. Emerging lifelong learning algorithms will be investigated to enable robotic agents to account for individual differences and temporal instabilities in the behavior-intention mapping of their human collaborators. The resulting model is expected to allow robotic systems to anticipate human actions, predict risks, and adjust their behavior to individual requirements over time. This is essential for many industrial tasks requiring physical human-robot collaboration (HRC), joint object manipulation, task coordination, teleoperation, and exoskeletons.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Predictive chemistry for novel drug formulations

Summary of PhD Program:

Novel pharmaceutical formulations go beyond the classical picture of small biological active molecules delivered in form of tablets, injections, or aerosols. New drug formulations often contain more complex molecules and delivery systems. Some of the latest Covid vaccines have provided contemporary examples of novel of mRNA-based active compounds delivered inside liquid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations. In general, RNA or DNA-based pharmaceuticals, antibodies, or combined formulations are currently developed at elevated speed for many disease applications.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in safety critical automatic controllers

Summary of PhD Program:

In recent years, the advent of deep neural networks and deep reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms for systems with continuous state and action spaces provides a new, automatic approach to design controllers. But RL techniques typically have no guarantees on their behaviour to ensure stability or safety. Therefore, this PhD project will investigate how to apply RL safely in an emerging control application typically approached with MPC, such as control of floating offshore wind turbines, fuel-saving adaptive cruise control systems for road vehicles, or virtual coupling of railway vehicles.
